Since 2009, the federal minimum wage rate for employees has been $7.25 per hour. In retrospect, this is hardly enough pay to take care of one’s self-- let alone a family with children. If a person were to add up the average cost of living for one week and then compare it to the average amount of money earned in minimum wage for that week, it would be apparent that there is little to no extra money for emergency situations. Increasing the minimum wage has been a major controversial issue; Democrats are proponents of raising the minimum wage, however, Republicans are trying to stop the movement. Many economists have discussed how raising the minimum wage could benefit millions of people and businesses, yet Republicans still hinder the†¦show more content†¦in Chen). Past research has demonstrated that raising the minimum wage is crucial to the â€Å"economic security of tens of millions of Americans† (â€Å"The Case For a Higher Minimum Wage†). With this p erspective, it is undeniable that the federal minimum wage fails to provide enough capital for even the most basic of necessities; however, many Republicans still deny the fact that the minimum wage needs to be increased regardless of how people â€Å"suffer.† In fact, many states and cities have increased their minimum wage above the federal level, which has made monumental differences for the working-class, but Republicans are â€Å"working to derail the minimum-wage increases that have already passed† locally by creating preemption bills that stop cities and states from making their own higher minimum wage. Many people received a higher wage, but with the preemption laws enacted, their higher wage got removed, and now are back where they started: 7.25 (Chen) The minimum wage needs to be increased in order to support the livelihoods of millions of Americans. If the minimum wage were to increase, productivity in the United States would increase as well.
